How Contempt of Court Works in Family Law
Contempt actions focus on enforcing existing court orders rather than relitigating the underlying case. The court looks at whether a valid order exists, whether a party had the ability to comply, and whether they failed to do so.
Proper preparation involves clearly identifying the order, documenting violations, and presenting the facts in a way that allows the court to understand what enforcement is being requested.
Child Support Contempt
If child support has not been paid as ordered, contempt may be used to enforce payment and compliance with the support order. This includes preparing documents to bring enforcement action or to respond when contempt papers have been served. See: Child Support Contempt of Court.
Parenting Plan Contempt
Parenting plan contempt focuses on enforcing a parenting plan when a parent fails to comply with court-ordered parenting time or other provisions. King County Superior Court also requires completion of a parenting seminar before a parenting plan contempt action may be filed. See: Parenting Plan Contempt of Court.
Choose the category above that matches the type of order being enforced so the documents and supporting facts are prepared for the correct contempt process.
