Central Seattle Neighborhood

Central Seattle, also known as the Central District or CD is described as mostly a residential area. This district's founding culture was Jewish from the early 20th century. The culture later shifted to a Japanese American culture until the interments of Japanese Americans during World War II.

The internment uprooted Japanese Americans, which created an avenue for African Americans to move into the area seeking jobs supporting the war efforts.

The district currently has lasting culture from all three of these periods of change. The Northwest African American Museum, a strong presence of Japanese churches, and synagogues are cultural markers that have remained many decades and even a century in some cases after the cultural shifts. The CD has a very diverse history.
